Limuru Golf and Country Club will be the center of attention this Friday and Saturday as the Kenya Golf Union (KGU) hosts its most prestigious event of the year—the KGU Chairman’s Prize 2025.

Traditionally held to honor the serving chairman, the tournament celebrates leadership, vision, and outstanding contributions to the growth of golf in Kenya.

This year, the event celebrates David Ndungu, whose term as KGU Chairman has been marked by transformative leadership and strategic progress for the sport, both locally and regionally.

One of Ndungu’s hallmark achievements is the expansion of the High-Performance Program, which now provides a clear development pathway for young Kenyan talent—guiding them from junior levels to elite amateur ranks and ultimately into the professional circuit.

Equally impactful has been his focus on course infrastructure and human capital.

Under his stewardship, golf course superintendents and greenkeepers—often unsung heroes of the game—received overdue recognition.

The first cohort of ten professionals is currently undergoing international certification at the Africa Turf Academy in South Africa, fully funded through a partnership between KGU, The R&A, and the Africa Turf Academy.

Coaching also received a fresh boost, with new appointments to the men’s national team and a more structured support system for both elite and upcoming coaches.

Ndungu’s leadership further saw the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) Series grow from 28 to 31 events, attracting top amateur talent from across East and Central Africa, including Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

This not only raised Kenya’s status as a regional golf hub but also provided local players with more competitive opportunities.

Kenya’s representation on the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) also grew from 25 to 31 players during his tenure, reflecting the country’s improved international competitiveness.

Ndungu has also been championing the “One Golf Kenya” initiative, which has brought together key golf bodies—KGU, the Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU), Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK), and the Kenya Golf Federation (KGF)—under a unified framework to streamline governance and enhance the sport’s development at all levels.

The 2025 Chairman’s Prize has also drawn strong corporate support, with Isuzu, NCBA Bank, Chai Gold, IMG, Windsor Motors, Tropical Heat, Crown Paints, Galana Energies, Serenity Spa, EABL, Zanna Leather, and Castel Mara backing the tournament.
