A team of five elite amateur golfers will fly the Kenyan flag at the prestigious MCB Indian Ocean Open in Mauritius this weekend.
Team Kenya comprises the 2025 Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series leader John Lejirma, 2024 KAGC winner Michael Karanga, Carl Wambasi, George Themburu, and Avnish Bhandari.
Their departure means they will miss this year’s Coast Open ‘Barry Cup’ at Mombasa Golf Club, one of the oldest and most anticipated events on the local calendar.

Karanga, last year’s Coast Open champion, was expected to defend his title, while Lejirma, currently riding high with seven wins this season, including five back-to-back, was also eyeing the Coast leg to extend his dominance.
“Unfortunately, I’ll miss the Coast Open this year as I’ll be heading to Mauritius for another golf opportunity,” Lejirma told Golf Score Kenya.
“It’s always tough to skip a big local event, but I’m grateful for the chance to represent and grow on a different stage.”
The MCB Indian Ocean Open, now in its 11th edition, is set for July 11–13 at the world-class Anahita Golf Club.
The event is a major stop on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) calendar and attracts top amateur and professional players from across the region and beyond.
