Mombasa Golf Club’s top amateur, Henry Kamau, delivered a sensational performance to win the 2025 NCBA Coast Open Barry Cup, his first-ever Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series title.

Kamau opened the three-day tournament on Friday with a modest two-over-par 73, finishing the first round in seventh place.

However, true to his midweek declaration that “this year, I’m going for it”, Kamau turned up the heat on Saturday with a stunning four-under-par 67, propelling him to the top of the leaderboard at two-under overall.

He sealed the victory on Sunday with a composed level-par 71, finishing with a total score of 211 (-2) to claim the prestigious Barry Cup on his home turf.

Kamau’s steady form edged out Golf Park’s Sammy Mulama by a single stroke in a tightly contested finale.

Mulama carded 73, 70, and 69 for a total of 212 (-1), while Danny Chelogoi of Eldoret Golf Club settled for third place on 215 (+2) after rounds of 71, 72, and 72.

“On the first day, I played it like a regular club tournament to stay calm. Saturday was when I wanted to show who’s who,” Kamau said after his win.

“It’s not pride, I’ve just waited so long for this moment. I finally have the trophy.”

Having taken up golf seven years ago, Kamau described the victory as a breakthrough moment in his amateur career.

“This is just the beginning. I want more titles, and I want to make sure Mombasa Golf Club gets to the top,” he added.

The 2025 NCBA Coast Open attracted 65 top amateur players from around the country and featured a prize purse of KES 400,000.

Kamau walked away with KES 92,500 for his victory.

Despite skipping the Mombasa leg, John Lejirma (2,000 points) and Michael Karanga (1,095) held their top spots in the KAGC rankings.

Elvis Muigua, third in the standings with 973 points, finished fifth and missed the chance to close the gap on Karanga.
