Chris Kinuthia of Thika Sports Club has been elected unopposed as the new Chairman of the Kenya Golf Union (KGU).

He takes over from David Ndung’u of Limuru Country Club, who served in the role since May 2024.

Kinuthia was elected during the KGU Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Friday at the prestigious Muthaiga Golf Club.

The voting process involved nominated delegates from affiliated clubs, two immediate past chairmen, and current members of the executive committee.

Prior to his election, Kinuthia served as KGU Vice Chairman and Tournaments Director.

His appointment marks a new chapter focused on strengthening partnerships with clubs, enhancing grassroots development, and raising the overall standard of the sport across the country.

In his acceptance speech, Kinuthia underscored the vital role of golf clubs in sustaining and growing the game:

“Our clubs are the lifeblood of Kenyan golf. They are where the game lives, breathes, and thrives. KGU must be a true partner—listening closely, supporting practically, and responding effectively to the needs of every club,” said Kinuthia.

He outlined his vision for the Union, pledging deeper engagement and stronger institutional support.

“We will enhance communication, provide legal support, especially in these challenging times, improve staff efficiency, and work hand in hand with clubs to grow participation and elevate standards,” he said.

Kinuthia also committed to broadening access and opportunities for golfers across the country.

“This is regardless of background or geography. Improving talent identification and development will be at the core of our agenda.”

Other newly elected officials include Brian Akun of Vetlab Sports Club, who moves from the role of secretary to vice chairman; Jonathan Marucha of Kenya Railway Golf Club, who takes over as secretary; and Weldon Mutai of Sigona Golf Club, who was elected Honorary Treasurer

Six individuals were elected to the Executive Committee from a pool of nine nominees.

They are James Gitonga (Mombasa Golf Club), Liban Roba (Karen Country Club), Peter Mwaura (Ruiru Sports Club), Robert Ngugi (Muthaiga Golf Club), Robert Obondy (Nakuru Golf Club), and Sam Kang’au of Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club.

These executive members reflect a broad representation of clubs from across Kenya, showcasing the depth and diversity of leadership within the KGU.

Together with the office bearers, they will guide the KGU’s mission of promoting and developing golf nationwide.

During the meeting, members also approved a special resolution to increase the annual club affiliation fee from Ksh3,000 to Ksh4,000.

The adjustment aims to strengthen the Union’s operational capacity and enhance support to member clubs.

The additional funds will help support key initiatives, including junior development programs, course rating services, and technical training for officials and staff.
