Nyali Golf and Country Club amateur Adel Balala delivered a commanding performance to seize the first-round lead at the NCBA Royal Classic, the second leg of the Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing, at Royal Nairobi Golf Club.

Balala carded a superb six-under-par 66 to finish one shot clear of the chasing pack after an impressive day on the course.

The Kenyan amateur set the tone early with an eagle at the par-five third hole and a birdie at the seventh to make the turn at three-under par.

He continued his strong play on the back nine, adding birdies on the 10th, 12th, 15th, 16th and 18th holes.

Despite dropping shots on the 11th and 14th, Balala maintained his composure to emerge as the clubhouse leader.

“I’m very pleased with how I played today. I stayed patient throughout the round, gave myself chances and managed to take advantage of most of them. The eagle on the third gave me a lot of confidence early on, and from there I focused on staying disciplined and sticking to my game plan,” said Balala.

“It’s only the first round, so there’s still a lot of golf to be played, but it’s always nice to put yourself in a good position heading into the next two days.”

Three players are tied for second place on five-under-par 67.

They include Muthaiga Golf Club’s Greg Snow, Nyali Golf and Country Club professional Daniel Nduva and Nelson Mudanyi of Muthaiga.

Snow recovered from an early bogey with a burst of four consecutive birdies between the fifth and eighth holes before adding more birdies on the 14th, 15th and 18th.

Nduva’s round featured an eagle on the seventh hole and four birdies, while Mudanyi stayed in contention after producing seven birdies during an aggressive round.

Ken Abuto sits fifth on two-under-par 70, while England’s Elliot Bradley and Uganda’s Abraham Ainamani lead the international challenge on one-under-par 71.

The tournament has attracted 96 golfers from 11 countries competing for Sunshine Development Tour points, Official World Golf Ranking points and a share of the KSh2 million prize fund.

The top 30 players and ties after Monday’s second round will advance to Tuesday’s final round in the battle for the title.
