Nigerian professional Sunday Olapade produced a clinical second-round performance to wrestle the lead from overnight pacesetter Adel Balala and move into pole position ahead of the final round of the NCBA Royal Classic at Royal Nairobi Golf Club.

Olapade fired a superb five-under-par 67 on Monday, climbing to four-under-par 140 overall and opening up a slender one-shot advantage in the second leg of the 2026 Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing.

Starting the day trailing the leaders, Olapade steadily worked his way up the leaderboard with a composed display that combined accuracy and consistency.

He recovered from an early bogey at the opening hole by responding with birdies at the second and third before adding further gains at the 10th, 11th, 14th, 16th and 18th.

A lone setback at the 12th did little to derail his charge as he posted one of the best scores of the day.

The Nigerian’s impressive round proved enough to leapfrog a tightly packed leaderboard that had been headed by Balala after the opening round.

“I played some really good golf today and managed to stay patient throughout the round. I gave myself opportunities and converted a number of them, especially on the back nine,” said Olapade.

“There is still one more round to play and my focus is on staying disciplined and finishing strongly.”

Balala, the Nyali Golf & Country Club amateur who led after an opening-round 66, struggled to replicate Sunday’s form but remains firmly in the title hunt.

His challenge got off to a difficult start as bogeys on the fifth and eighth holes, coupled with a double bogey at the seventh, saw him surrender his advantage.

Although he mounted a spirited comeback with birdies at the 14th and 16th and an eagle on the par-five 15th, further dropped shots on the 11th, 12th and 18th holes left him with a three-over-par 75 for the day.

The round saw Balala slip into a share of second place on three-under-par 141, one shot behind the new leader.

“It was definitely a tougher day than yesterday. I didn’t play my best golf, especially on the front nine, but I’m happy that I stayed patient and kept fighting,” said Balala.

“Being tied on second heading into the final day is still a good position, and my focus now is on resetting and giving myself a chance tomorrow.”

Joining Balala in second place is fellow Nyali golfer Daniel Nduva, who also endured a challenging round.

The professional recovered from back-to-back bogeys on the opening two holes with birdies on the third, fourth and fifth, but additional mistakes later in the round saw him settle for a two-over-par 74.

Nduva remains just one stroke off the lead heading into the decisive final round.

“It wasn’t my cleanest round, but I am pleased with the way I stayed in the fight. The conditions were tougher today and there were moments where I had to dig deep,” said Nduva.

“The birdies early in the round helped settle me down after the slow start. Tomorrow is a new day and I am looking forward to the challenge of competing for the title.”

Kenya’s Nelson Mudanyi and Nigeria’s Godwin Okoko are tied for fourth on two-under-par 142, while Muthaiga’s Greg Snow and Tanzania’s Nuru Mollel sit a further shot back on one-under-par 143.

With just two shots separating the top six players, the battle for the NCBA Royal Classic title remains finely balanced heading into Tuesday’s final round.

A total of 30 players and ties made the cut and will contest the final day for a share of the KES 2 million prize fund, with the winner set to walk away with KES 400,000 alongside valuable Official World Golf Ranking, World Amateur Golf Ranking and Sunshine Development Tour Order of Merit points.
